Zambian villagers, animals have to drink from same dam

12 July 2016, 16:01

Lusaka - The people of Kapanda village in Chief Chipepo of Kapiri Mposhi district in Zambia have requested that relief food be urgently delivered to the area to avert hunger, Zambian Watchdog reports.

A village headman in Kapande said that the poor crop output was due to the late payment and late delivery of inputs under the Farmer Input Support Programme, high cost of fertiliser and general inconsistencies by the Patriotic Front government.

The traditional leader called on the government to urgently avert the impending food shortages and poverty in the region. He said that farmers were now unable to even send their children to school as they had no money.

He also shared his frustration at the government's inability to provide a sufficient amount of boreholes, a situation which has forced villagers to drink from the same dam as their cattle.

According to previous reports by the Zambian Watchdog, Zambia had already been warned it was at risk of facing a critical food shortage due to poor agriculture policies by the PF government.

News24 report indicated that other countries in the southern African region were also adversely affected by droughts.

The World Food Programme (WFP) said that the droughts were likely to damage harvests across region -  from southern Angola to Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique and Namibia.

Zambian Agriculture Minister Given Lubinda recently said that his country's yield would drop by 21%.

The WFP warned in March that at least 16 million people were already food insecure in southern Africa, and recently the figure was revised upwards to about 32 million by the Southern Africa Food and Nutrition Security Working Group.
