Zambian police arrest 2 youths for booing president

27 January 2016, 22:26

Kalomo – Zambian police have arrested two youths after President Edgar Lungu was booed during a rally on Wednesday last week, reports the Post.

According to Southern Province Police Commisioner Godwin Phiri, "this behaviour cannot go unchecked".

President Edgar Lungu was booed and jeered in Zambia's Kalomo district, as hundreds of youth showed signs of no confidence in his government.

The youths are also being charged for showing a symbol associated with opposition party United Party for National Development (UPND), while chanting "we want change".

The youth accused Lungu of veering off the path set by former head of state, Michael Sata.

During the rally, Lungu threatened the youth that booed him with arrest, accusing them of having been paid to shadow his rally.

"I know that you youths have been sponsored to do this, but let me warn you that balamwaanga namulasobana (they will arrest you if you are playing). It’s important that people learn to live peacefully as one people in the country. In a democracy, people are free to choose and support candidates of their choice, but they should not fight those opposing them," Lungu was quoted as saying.
