Zambian maize meal smuggled to Burundi amid shortages

09 March 2016, 16:37

Kasama – Zambian maize and maize meal are reportedly being smuggled to Burundi amid shortages of the commodities in the southern African country, reports Daily Nation.

According to the report, "greedy businessmen" were smuggling both commodities to Burundi and other neighbouring countries.

Police officers in Kasama recently impounded two trucks transporting mealie meal headed to Burundi and other countries, the report said.

This came, as reports on Tuesday said the Zambian Revenue Authority (ZRA) had impounded 28 maize-laden trucks destined for Malawi.

According to the Times of Zambia, the vehicles did not have export permits from the country's ministry of agriculture.

In February, Zambian authorities imposed an export ban on maize meal, leaving Zimbabwean millers struggling to get about 70 000 tons of already-paid-for maize meal from their northern neighbours.

The move was made to boost the country's reserves in light of the El Nino-induced drought.

It is predicted that Zambia's 2015/2016 maize output would be a third lower than the previous year due to the severe drought that has hit the region.
