Zambian fuel tank drivers strike for pay hike

21 January 2016, 19:04

Ndola - Fuel tanker drivers from a Tanzanian oil company, Tazama Pipeline Limited, based in Ndola, Zambia have started striking for better working conditions and increased pay, reports the Post.

The drivers refused to deliver fuel to various parts of the southern African country, which could threaten the availability of fuel at service stations.

"We will not work until our matters are addressed.  This inertia to deal with issues affecting stakeholders will plunge this country into a serious fuel shortage," one of the drivers was quoted as saying.

Reports on Thursday indicated that Copperbelt Permanent Secretary Howard Sikwela had visited the Tazama terminal to address the matter.

This came less than a month after a private security guard shot dead a tanker driver in Lusaka, after he was reportedly found decanting fuel collected from his truck. The guard allegedly acted on his employer's order.

The shooting resulted in strike by a group of tanker drivers, according to the Daily Nation.
