Zambia opposition slams president Lungu's 'brutality'

07 December 2015, 14:47

Lusaka – Zambian opposition has reportedly warned President Edgar Lungu over his "continued" use of law enforcement agencies on his political opponents, telling him "the world is watching", according to a report.

This comes after a team of over 60 heavily armed officers from Zambia’s army, the intelligence and the police, raided Chongwe Member of Parliament Sylvia Masebo’s home, causing extensive damage to property, The Post reported on Sunday.

This, the opposition described as "brutality" by Lungu on his rivals.

The incident which happened on Friday, left occupants, including a 5-year-old child traumatised, the report said.

The raid on Masebo’s home came a few months after Lungu warned that those in opposition who were fuelling violence would be dealt with firmly.

"That political victimisation on Sylvia Masebo by the PF is abhorrent in an emerging democracy like Zambia. This is particularly so when Zambia is trying to come up with a new governance framework," political analyst Francis Chigunta was quoted as saying.

Several people tweeted about the incident:

This was not the first time Zambia’s law enforcement agencies were accused of brutality. In October, FDD President Edith Nawakwi expressed shock after police officers beat up students at Copperbelt University, according to All Africa.com.
