Zambia a shining example of democracy - US envoy

09 December 2015, 19:28

Lusaka – The United States Ambassador to Australia, John Berry has commended Zambia for being a "shining example" of democracy and peace on the African continent, reports The Post.

Berry said this during a meeting with Zambia's High Commissioner to Australia, George Zulu at the US Embassy in Canberra recently.

Berry said the southern African country was "like a light on top of a hill, giving hope and leading others in the right direction".

The US envoy also expressed hope that the country’s economic challenges, especially in the energy sector would be solved by government with the help from the international community.

This comes as Zambia's opposition this week castigated the country's ruling PF government over its policies which it claimed were not pro-poor.

Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) Member of Parliament Elijah Muchina for Ikeleng’I lashed out at President Edgar Lungu's administration for failing to deliver on any of its promises.

"People were promised heaven on earth by the PF before they came into power that they will have more jobs, more money in their pockets, but the opposite has happened. There is more misery today than any other time of any government," Muchina said.

Lungu came into office early this year following a snap election in January after the death in office of president Michael Sata in October 2014.
