We can't help ruling PF party's agenda, says Zambian opposition MP

03 February 2016, 17:03

Lusaka – Zambia's ruling Patriotic Front (PF) party has reportedly been told to fold up if it is not ready for the country's upcoming elections.

According to The Post, MP Elijah Muchima - of Zambia's largest opposition party, the Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) Member of Parliament - made the statement following President Edgar Lungu's recent announcement that he was seeking a pact with the MDD to secure a 50% plus one threshold in the upcoming presidential elections.

"The plain truth is that MMD is a factor, whether they like it or not. In any case, the MMD does not need PF. MMD must realign itself with a very progressive party that can bring sanity," Muchima was quoted as saying.

Muchima said the MMD had become "unsteady" and was on a "slippery slope" because of individuals making personal decisions for the entire party.

"We can't go and start helping the PF with their agenda and the MMD is a progressive party that only has to realign itself with another progressive opposition," said the MP.

Meanwhile, both parties announced over the weekend that they would be partnering up ahead of the elections, although the MMD National Youth Treasurer, Lengwe Bwalya, commented that it was clear the PF was desperate, hence its erratic decision to make a merger.

Zambians take to the polls on August 11.
