WATCH: Man escapes death row, renews wedding vows 27 years later

25 January 2016, 15:17

Nakuru - A 52-year-old man, who escaped death row after serving 27 years in prison, got married to his childhood flame on Sunday in Bahati, Kenya.

Joseph Kinyua, who left his wife Josephine Wanjiru with a two-year-old baby and three-month pregnancy, is now a grandfather.

His wife, who was only 21 when he was convicted, said she waited for 27 years because of the love she had for her husband.

In a video by Citizen TV, Kinyua revealed that he was sentenced to death for robbery with violence, before his sentence was reduced to life imprisonment.

Kinyua, who maintained his innocence, was said to have conducted a Kikuyu traditional wedding before his arrest, according to Standard media.

The Kikuyu traditional wedding ceremony, which is also known as ngurario, entails dowry negotiations and payment, as well as receiving blessings of the bride and groom’s parents. It's usually days long before the wedding day.

Kinyua was lucky to be granted presidential pardon in December 2015 after serving 27 years at Kamiti Maximum Prison, only to find that his sons had grown and even borne him several grandchildren.
