Uncle who raped, impregnated niece gets life imprisonment

26 January 2016, 10:19 Kaveel Singh, News24

Durban – An uncle who raped and impregnated his 16-year-old niece in Ntambanana, KwaZulu-Natal has received a life imprisonment sentence, police have said.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane on Tuesday said the 29 year-old’s life term was handed down on Monday at the Empangeni Regional Court.

“During September 2013 the victim was in her room watching television at Ntambanana area when she was approached by her uncle who [lives] in the same homestead.

“She was raped and threatened not to tell anyone about the incident. The following year, her mother noticed that the victim used to sleep and always looked tired. She was asked about these changes in her life and that was when she told her mother that she was pregnant. The victim told her mother that her uncle impregnated her.”

Zwane said a case of rape was thereafter opened at Ntambanana police station. The Empangeni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit began their investigating that led to the arrest.

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni welcomed the sentence handed down to the rapist.

“This will send a strong message to the would-be rapist that the police will investigate and present enough evidence to courts that will lead to convicting the accused. I also encourage the victims of rape that they must not keep quite if intimidated by the rapist,” she said.
