Uganda: Rigging polls could lead to a coup d'etat, opposition warns

12 January 2016, 13:27

Kampala - In the lead-up to Uganda's next election, opposition Go Forward presidential candidate, Amama Mbabazi, has warned that rigging of results could lead to a coup in the east African country, Daily Monitor has reported.

Addressing journalists in Mbale Town, Mbabazi revealed that tampering of votes could lead to a coup d'etat, advising voters that they should protect their votes when leaving polling stations.

Mbabazi's comments came in response to NRM candidate Yoweri Museveni saying that he will not leave power, come the next election.

Speaking during a rally last week, Museveni likened himself to a farmer, saying that he could not leave his plantation just as it started to bear fruit.

Reacting to Mbabazi's remarks, Electoral Commission spokesperson Jotham Taremwa, said he (Mbabazi) should rather report any instances of rigging as opposed to making threats in this regard.

According to a Uganda News report, Mbabazi had previously claimed that the NRM government had already commenced their rigging campaign through the Police's Crime Preventers.

Major General Benon Biraaro, presidential candidate of the Farmers' Party of Uganda, agreed with Mbabazi's sentiments, saying that crime preventers have been trained as political vehicles for the NRM to rig the 2016 vote in the country, Daily Monitor reported in a separate report.
