Tsvangirai discharged from SA hospital, expected home soon

30 May 2016, 15:04

Johannesburg – Morgan Tsvangirai, the leader of Zimbabwe's main opposition, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), has been discharged from a South African private medical facility, reports NewsDay.

Tsvangirai's spokesperson Luke Tamborinyoka said the former prime minister would return to his home country "soon".

Tamborinyoka said the former prime minister was in high spirits.

"He is out of hospital and is in high spirits. Doctors here have given him a clean bill of health," Tamborinyoka was quoted saying.

Tsvangirai was admitted at a Pretoria/Johannesburg hospital about two weeks ago. However, it remained unclear what he was admitted for.

In allaying fears of him not being well, Tsvangirai urged people not to worry much about him, saying they should instead forge ahead in making Zimbabwe better as the country was in a very "perilous state".

According to a previous News 24 report, news that Tsvangirai, who has led the MDC since its formation in 1999, had to travel outside the country for treatment would raise some eyebrows.

The opposition has been critical of President Robert Mugabe and his family's insistence on seeking medical care in Singapore and Dubai.

Mugabe's daughter, Bona, last month chose not to have her first baby in Zimbabwe, instead travelling with her mother to Dubai.

MDC secretary Douglas Mwonzora, however, said Tsvangirai's doctor in Zimbabwe had told him to go to South Africa because "the facility in question was not available locally".
