Tensions in Uganda ahead of Museveni's inauguration

10 May 2016, 16:29

Kampala – Tensions are reportedly rising in Uganda, as members from the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party continue to be arrested ahead of President Yoweri Museveni’s swearing-in ceremony, a report said on Tuesday.

According to the Daily Monitor, more FDC members were apprehended on Monday after police stormed the party's offices.

Museveni is set to be sworn in on May 12.

Police raided FDC offices on Monday and arrested its deputy secretary Ggneral for administration, Harold Kaija, in Kampala.

Kaija had just finished addressing the FDC weekly media briefing when around 20 police officers stormed the offices.

This was the third time that the party's offices were raided since the February 18 elections.

This came as FDC leader Kizza Besigye’s home remained restricted by police since May 5. Other members, among them, FDC spokesperson Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, were also being policed.

Threats against journalists were also making the rounds, despite police denying this.

Last week, the opposition called for a nationwide strike on May 12 against Museveni's re-election.

The government, however, moved swiftly and called for a ban on live media coverage of the protest, saying those who defied the ban risked having their licences revoked.

Meanwhile Ugandans took to twitter.
