SADC convenes over El Nino

26 February 2016, 22:44

Johannesburg - A two-day meeting has been convened by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in Johannesburg to develop response strategies to the El Nino that has plagued the region, the Namibian has reported.

The consultative meeting, which is scheduled to take place on February 25 and 26, will see stakeholders deliberating over harsh weather patterns being experienced across the region as well as the results thereof.

The meeting was organised by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, in conjunction with the World Food Programme.

At the forefront of the meeting's agenda is drought and food security, with emphasis being put on preparedness strategies.

According to a statement released by the SADC secretariat, 165 delegates from across various sectors are expected to attend.

According to a previous News24 report, at least than 30 million people have been affected by El Nino in southern Africa.

The phenomenon, which is reported to be the worst of its kind in 50 years, has been gaining strength since March last year and is expected to continue until the end of the year.

Many in the region are also facing the threat of hunger, with Al Jazeera reporting that at least 11 million children will be malnourished as a result of the phenomenon.

Lesotho, Zimbabwe and most of South Africa have been declared disaster states, with maize output dropping by 30% in South Africa alone.

Despite numerous calls to the international community for assistance, the region remains in need of aid.
