Pupil’s punishment for video of teacher ‘too harsh’

16 March 2016, 13:33

Comments open.

Bloemfontein – A Grade 9 pupil has landed in deep trouble after filming underneath his teacher’s skirt during class, Netwerk24 reported.  His dad, however, believes the punishment has been heavy-handed.

After taking the video on his cellphone, the 14-year-old Grey’s College boy and his classmates watched the video and then deleted it, but one of the pupils spoke up to the school’s authorities.

The next day, the boy’s father had to fetch him from school after he had been suspended for a week.

But the school didn’t stop there with the disciplinary process, although it refuses to speak out on what other punishment the boy faces.

Grey’s own chairperson, Henry Buchner, says he cannot say anything and the teacher concerned also can’t talk about the incident.

But the boy’s father explained to Netwerk24 what corrective measures his son faces.

The teen will have to sit in detention every day next term, he may not wear school colours and must attend three sessions with a school psychologist.

He has also been banned for the rest of the year from participating in any sports or other extra mural activities.

He has also admitted to taking the video and made verbal and written apologies but will also have to apologise to teaching staff on a date yet to be determined by the school’s headmaster, Deon Scheepers.

‘They want to humiliate my child’

Then he will also have to apologise to his classmates and explain what he has learned from the entire saga.

He will also have to pay for three counselling sessions for the teacher concerned with a psychologist of her choice.

But the father says he is unhappy with the drawn out process which followed the incident.

The father argues that the video had been deleted and his son immediately admitted guilt. He had also apologised to the teacher and the school already, the dad says.

He feels that the further punitive measures are too much and the school is being too harsh on his son.

“Why must he now apologise again? They just want to humiliate my child and get him out of the school.

“My son lives for Grey. His record speaks for itself. He made a mistake and admitted it. He’s just a child.”
