President pardons over 200 inmates

07 January 2016, 18:06

Blantyre - Malawi President, Peter Mutharika, has pardoned at least 230 inmates in order to relieve pressure from the country’s overcrowded prisons, reports the Nyasa times.

According to the report the southern Africa nation leader released the prisoners as a symbol to mark the Christmas and New Year’s celebrations.

"The pardon of the 230 prisoners is a symbol of forgiveness during the Christmas and News Years celebrations," the ministry of Home Affairs and Internal security was quoted saying .

The report revealed that president Mutharika has been pardoning inmates who are half way through their sentences since the celebrations of the country’s independence and Christmas last year.

The southern African country has about 34 prisons, which are home to at least 12 000 prisoners.
