PHOTOS: Ivory Coast president rewards Olympic medalists with houses

06 September 2016, 16:03

Abidjan - Ivory Coast President Alassane Quattara has rewarded the country's two medalists at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games with houses after their sporting excellence captured a gold and bronze medal at the sporting showpiece, BBC reports.

Cheick Cisse, who won Taekwondo gold, was given $85 000 and Ruth Gbagbi, who won bronze in the women's event, received $51 000.

Cisse's gold medal was the country's first in its history after he won the men's 80kg event, defeating Great Britain's Lutalo Muhammad in a stunning victory with a last-second spinning kick to his opponent's head.

Last year, Quatarra made similar awards to members of the national football team after they won the African Cup of Nations.

Quatarra and his wife, Dominique, wore the medals around their necks, as they posed for pictures with the two athletes at the presidential palace in the country's commercial capital, Abidjan.

The president praised the two athletes and the entire Olympic team for their efforts and thanked them for representing their country with distinction.

"Thanks to you two Ivory Coast went brilliantly in the inner circle of the medals of the Olympic Games. “Dear athletes, this victory is yours but also your country and your federation, I would like to congratulate all the coaches and all those who have represented our country in Rio,” he added.
