Pay for land or leave, Mozambican chief tells Zambian farmers

21 December 2015, 15:28

Lusaka – Mozambican traditional leader, Chief Kacha of the Chewa people has demanded that Zambians who have encroached on his chiefdom pay reparations or vacate his fields, reports The Post.

Chief Kacha has demanded the squatters pay K100 a month or leave as the Southern nationals have caused considerable destruction to the forests for farming purposes.

“The money I am demanding will help me find means and ways to employ a new system to protect the forests, to avoid climate change,” Chief Kacha said.

Meanwhile, Zambians occupying the land have called for a reduction but Chief Kacha maintains the amount of money they are required to pay doesn’t outweigh the destruction they have caused.

The Times of Zambia reported earlier this year on Mozambique’s economic landscape saying that the country is rich with natural resources hence the attraction for Zambians to cross over for farming purposes.

Zambia and Mozambique are considered to be similar in political and environmental landscape and have shared good relations spanning decades.
