Over 500 000 refugees living in Uganda

17 December 2015, 18:55

Kampala –Uganda has reportedly received at least 90 000 refugees and asylum seekers this year from its crisis-hit neighbours, reports the Daily Monitor.

This was said by the United Nations' state minister for relief, Musa Ecweru, during her address to UN agencies.

The total of number of refugees from countries such as South Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi had been tallied at 509 447 in Uganda.

Ecweru called on the international community to lend a helping hand in light of increased violence in Burundi.

According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Uganda is the third country with the highest refugee population on the continent, and is the ninth worldwide.

The east African country has been commended for being one of the most "forward-thinking" towards refugees.

NTV Uganda reported this week that Uganda was expecting around100 000 refugees from Burundi following the recent outbreak of political violence.

Last week three military facilities were attacked by an unidentified group where about 87 people were killed in Burundi capital.
