Opposition slams Ruto's public support for Museveni

11 December 2015, 16:48

Kampala – Ugandan opposition leaders and political analysts have criticised Kenyan Deputy President William Ruto over his public show of support for President Yoweri Museveni.

Kenya's NTV aired a rally in Kapchorwa District on Thursday where scores of supporters were seen sporting yellow and black attire, jubilantly welcoming Museveni and Ruto.

Ruto also took the stand to address and urge the National Resistance Movement (NRM) members to support Museveni.

This, consequently, did not gone down well with opposition leaders.

Political analysts said there could be a diplomatic problem if Museveni is not re-elected.

Adams Oloo, a political scientist, said the development could jeopardise relations with future leaders.

Watch the NTV video posted to YouTube.

Sarcastically, an opposition official referring to Ruto said: "Let him renounce his Kenyan citizenship, apply for Uganda citizenship so that Museveni can appoint him deputy president of Uganda."

Meanwhile the Daily Monitor reported that Ruto’s visit followed a drop in NRM supporters.

Earlier reports said Museveni had declined to speculate on his chances of becoming head of state for a fifth term.

Speaking at a press briefing, Museveni said he would not speculate on the upcoming elections.

This was after he was asked to reflect on his chances against his two rivals, Kizza Besigye of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) and the Go Forward candidate, Amama Mbabazi.
