Nyerere's leadership was legendary, says Mugabe

28 January 2016, 19:53

Harare - Zimbabwean strongman President Robert Mugabe has reportedly urged Africans to honour the legacy of the founding fathers.

According to the state-owned Herald newspaper, Mugabe, 91, said this while launching a book of a collection of speeches by Tanzania's founding president, the late Julius Nyerere.

The book is entitled: Julius Nyerere, Asante sana, Thank you, Mwalimu.

Mugabe said Africa's founding fathers' legacy continued to benefit the continent, adding that the "look east policy" was pioneered by Nyerere.

Mugabe described Nyerere as committed to the liberation, unity and development of Africa, saying that his leadership was "legendary".

Meanwhile, according to NewsDay, Mugabe also proposed that an African Union peace and security building currently under construction in Ethiopia, be named after the veteran former east African nation leader.

Mugabe said Nyerere was a true Pan-Africanist and therefore, deserved great respect.

Mugabe made similar calls at the opening of the 35th Southern African Development Community (SADC) summit of heads of state and government in Gaborone, Botswana last years.

He encouraged African countries to honour those who fought for the liberation of the continent.

"Let us remember those that have endowed us with legacy. This could be in the form of something. Can't we have a fund in their honour?" Mugabe was quoted saying at the time.
