My supporters are being killed - Ugandan opposition leader

08 January 2016, 19:03

Kampala – Ugandan opposition presidential candidate, Amama Mbabazi has claimed that his supporters are being targeted by the State, reports Daily Monitor.

This comes as his head of security, Christopher Aine's  whereabouts still remain a mystery following his arrest last month, the report said.

“In the last one month alone, dozens who identify with the Go Forward campaign in one way or another have been assaulted, arrested, disappeared and even killed,” Mbabazi was quoted saying.

Mbabazi  claimed that from the moment he announced his running for presidency he had received continuous intimidation as well attempts to subdue his supporters.

But police on Friday rubbished Mbabazi's claims saying they were "misleading, inciting and calculated to arouse unnecessary anxiety in the public," report the Daily Monitor.

On December 13th Mbabazi, during one of his rallies in Ntungamo, was met with violent action by President Yoweri Museveni's , National Resistance Movement (NRM) supporters, reported Daily Monitor.

After the clash seven Go Forward supporters were remanded. However, Christopher Aine’s name was removed last minute from the charge sheet.

Ntungamo District police commander Baker Kawonawo confirmed that they had seven people in custody but later only reflected six people who were then released.

Kawanowo said at the time that Aine was not in police custody but ''we are about to arrest him, we will soon have him".
