Museveni to get 51% of votes, new poll shows

21 January 2016, 17:02

Kampala – A newly-released opinion poll has revealed that Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni will win the upcoming presidential election with 51% of the votes, reports the Daily Monitor.

The Forum for Democratic Change presidential candidate, Kizza Besigye, was in second position with 32%, and Amama Mbabazi, the Go Forward bearer, with 12%.

The poll was conducted by a Kampala-based research firm, Research World International, in partnership with NTV Uganda and Uganda Governance Monitoring platform between December 19, 2015, and January 10.

With 28 days left to the elections, the poll showed that the five other candidates – Dr Abed Bwanika, Professor Venansius Baryamureeba, Maureen Kyalya, Major General Benon Biraro, and Joseph Mabirizi – combined would get 1%.

In December, Museveni predicted he would win the election with at least 80% of the votes.

Museveni said this in response to an opinion poll conducted by the Daily Monitor and Kenyan research and consulting firm, Infotrak. According to the poll, Museveni would have won with 60% votes had the elections been conducted between December 6.

Uganda would choose its next president on February 18.

Meanwhile, Mbabazi was quoted by the media as saying:

@AmamaMbabazi: Opinion polls are nothing to go by, especially in Uganda where there is a high degree of intimidation #UgandaDecides
