Malawian politician's 'kill the gays' remarks are criminal - law society

05 January 2016, 19:39

Nyasa –The Malawian Law Society (MLS) has reportedly expressed anger over homophobic remarks made by the spokesperson of the former ruling People’s Party.

Ken Msonda demanded that homosexuals be killed after the country's justice minister Samuel Tembenu put a temporary prohibition on anti-homosexual laws.

Msonda described homosexuals as being worse than dogs and that gays and lesbians were "sons and daughters of the devil".

“Arresting them won’t address this problem because sooner or later they are being released on bail. The best way to deal with this problem is to KILL them!” he wrote on his Facebook page.

But Lawyers at MLS defined such remarks as hate speech and warned the nation that it should not be confused with freedom of speech as stated in the constitution, according to Nyasa Times.

MLS said such remarks were "certainly beneath anybody who lays claim to being a leader in our country".

Msonda's remarks were considered "contemptible, irresponsible and bordering on hate speech".

Msonda has since been reported to the Malawi Human Rights Commission and the police to launch an investigation.
