Malawi food crisis: Egypt donates $27 000

10 February 2016, 20:57

Lilongwe – The Egyptian government has donated $27 000 as part of its contribution towards the hunger crisis in Malawi.

Nyasa Times reported that Maher Adel El-Adawy, the Egyptian ambassador to Malawi, presented the cheque in the capital Lilongwe.

El-Adawy said, even though Egypt itself was not without challenges, the north African country wanted to support Malawi in any way possible.

"We deemed it necessary to respond to the President's (Peter Mutharika) appeal for food support. This is our second part of the three donations we promised to make to the country," El-Adawy was quoted as saying.

El-Adawy also made an appeal to other countries to lend their support to Malawi.

Food shortages

The World Bank has blamed the food shortages on the Malawian government's ban on maize exports.

The bank argued that the ban halted farmers from producing maize which they could sell to other countries.

"Our concern with the export ban is that it limits the scope to expand production among more medium and large-scale farms if they are unable to market the surplus," World Bank Senior Country Economist, Richard Record, was quoted by Malawi24 as saying.

According to the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC), at least  2.8 million people in the country are currently facing hunger.
