Malawi Catholic body raises concern over rise in mob justice

09 March 2016, 15:31

Nsanje – The Catholic body in Malawi has raised concern over the rise in cases of mob justice cases across the country, reports Malawi24.

The Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) Acting national Secretary, Martin Chiphwanya said mob justice in a democratic country was worrisome.

Chiphwanya warned that people should not take matters into their own hands.

"It is worrisome to note that people have resorted to mob justice whenever the alleged cases of theft, robbery and witchcraft are reported in communities while we have courts and police officers," Chiphwanya was quoted as saying.

Chiphwanya said law enforcement should make more of an effort to gain public trust so the public can desist from taking matters into their own hands due to distrust of the courts.

Chiphwanya's remarks came a few weeks after President Peter Mutharika expressed shock, and spoke out against the plight of mob justice.

Mutharika spoke in particular about the recent murder of four elderly people who were killed in February by an angry mob who believed they were witches.

Byson Kanjete, Eliza Enoce Kanjete, Elenefa Kanjete, and Idesi Julius Kanjete, were beaten to death by members of the community who accused them of being involved in witchcraft and causing the death of a 17-year-old girl.
