Kabila has done well, says Zambian economist

08 January 2016, 19:03

Lusaka - Zambian economist, Cosmos Musumali, has commended Democratic Republic of Congo's (DRC) president Joseph Kabila for "performing well in the last 15 years under numerous challenges", reports the Post.

Also read: Joseph Kabila is a steely, enigmatic leader.

Musumali, who is also the Rainbow Party first deputy general secretary, said Kabila had performed "pretty well" despite the DRC being spilt up in three zones.

He said Kabila inherited an already war torn country and "made huge compromises and within a year, there was relative peace in most of the regions - apart from the eastern provinces and Katanga where several militia remained active”.

DRC is preparing to go to the polls in November, with Kabila increasingly coming under fire from across the world for what is seen as his intention to prolong his time in office.

According to BBC, Kabila is expected to extend his stay in power for his third five-year term despite mass protests in parts of the country.

A UN report showed that so far 649 people comprising mainly of protesters, activists and political opponents have been detained as a result of protests.

The UN report stated that "the shrinking of democratic space was likely to impact the electoral process".
