Abuja - Nigerian elders have reportedly called for former president Goodluck Jonathan's incarceration, should he be found guilty of fraud in the ongoing investigation into the $2.1bn arms deal scandal.
Deputy national leader of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), Paul Unongo, who is also the former power and steel minister said Jonathan should be probed about his involvement in the arms scandal and face the consequences, if found guilty.
While sharing his sentiments during an interview with Punch, Unongo also added that Jonathan should be granted special consideration for his encouragement of democracy in the country and for conceding defeat in the last general elections.
Unongo said Jonathan "should not be embarrassed" if found guilty, but show willingness to refund stolen money to the State.
Unongo's utterances came in response to the ex-president being implicated in former National Security Adviser Sambo Dasuki's corrupt dealings regarding arms procurement.
Dasuki was arrested last year for allegedly stealing more than $2bn meant to purchase weapons for the military to fight the Boko Haram insurgency.
Dasuki's lawyer, Ahmed Raji, recently said that Dasuki carried out instructions given by Jonathan during his administration, thereby implicating him in the arms deal.
Unongo revealed that Jonathan's arrest had not yet been ordered due to the Federal Government abiding by the dictates of law in order to avoid being viewed as dictatorial.
President Muhammadu Buhari also recently commented on the allegations, saying Jonathan will not be spared should he be found guilty of fraud conducted during his administration.
According to a Naij report, elder and senator during the Second Republic, Pa Ayo Fasanmi, said it was "only a matter of time" before Jonathan faced trial over corruption and fraud relating to the arms scandal.
