I have a duty to protect black people - Museveni

10 February 2016, 20:57

Kampala – Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has vowed to leave power only after the east African region is united, reports Daily Monitor

Speaking during a live television broadcast, Museveni said he had a duty to protect black people and to ensure they embraced unity.

"I am not a fanatic of presidency. If you want to survive, you blacks, you must work for African unity and for pan-Africanism. How will you survive against Britain, China and India? These are becoming superpowers," Museveni said.

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer said his aim was to unite Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and Tanzania under one single sovereign state through the East African Federation.

Museveni has been in power for three decades.

He intends to seek another term when Ugandans go to the polls on February 18.

One of his main rivals in the upcoming polls, Forum for Democratic Change leader Kizza Besigye, recently made a bold statement, stating that he had accumulated significant support that could lead to his victory.

Besigye, however, said that there were two main obstacles that stood in his way - intimidation and voter bribery.

"If nobody is able to steal our votes, then you can rest assured that the victory will be a very easy one," Besigye was quoted as saying.
