Ghanaian dad held over trafficking teenage son

25 January 2016, 18:36

Accra – A Ghanaian man has been arrested for allegedly trafficking his 12-year-old son, a report said on Monday.

According to the Ghana News Agency, Samuel Hago was arrested after he allegedly trafficked his teenage son to a fishing community at Ada in the Greater Accra Region.

The report said the father offered his son to a fishing community for two years.

The report claimed  that he was taken to a nearby camp where he was chained and forced to work until an unidentified assemblyman took him to the social welfare department, which later led to his father’s arrest.

Hago is currently out on bail, while investigations continue.

According to the Irin news, hundreds of children in Ghana are "sold" into forced labour by parents desperate to raise money for the upkeep of the family.

The report revealed that Ghana's Human Trafficking Act was passed in 2005, but its first successful trafficking prosecution was only on January 27 2010 when a woman was imprisoned for buying two boys for $65 to work in the fishing industry.
