Elections: Zambian president threatens opposition

23 June 2016, 08:10

Lusaka - Zambian President Edgar Lungu has been caught up in a war of words with opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) leader Hakainde Hichilema, with the two political leaders labelling each other as "stupid", The Post reports.

Lungu called Hichilema stupid for not conceding defeat already in the upcoming August 11 general elections race and threatened to instruct the police command to "sort out" the opposition.

Lungu said this during a campaign rally in the capital Lusaka over the weekend.

The president indicated that he would deal with Hichilema if he refused to concede defeat.

In his response, however, Hichilema said that he was not intimidated by the head of state's "idle threats" and said that Lungu was stupid for using state institutions like the police to intimidate voters.

The UPND leader claimed that the president was hiring and firing police officials on the basis of whether they were willing to carry out his commands of intimidation, by beating opposition supporters.

News24 reported previously that Lungu was expected by many to come out victorious in the upcoming general elections.

Lungu has proclaimed that the elections would be free and fair.
