Drunk man stabs paramedics

26 September 2016, 14:41 Chelsea Pieterse, The Witness

Pietermaritzburg - An attack on three Pietermaritzburg paramedics on Saturday night has left one paramedic with stab wounds to the face and hand.

While transporting patients from an earlier incident to hospital on Saturday night, ER24 paramedics came across a collision between two vehicles on Manning Avenue. The paramedics pulled over to assess the victims and were verbally abused by four men from one of the vehicles involved in the collision.

A witness at the scene, who would not be named, said the situation soon became chaotic with people shouting and screaming as bystanders looked on.

The witness said that after paramedics told the men that the police were on the way, one lunged at one of the ambulance crew. Another crew member got in between the two and was punched by the man, who was wearing a knuckle duster, on the side of the head. The man then produced a knife, stabbing the paramedic once in the face and once in the hand.

ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing Harduth said a member of the public stepped in and disarmed the knife-wielding man.

“When another ER24 emergency vehicle arrived on the scene, the man ran across the road and returned with a brick and attempted to further assault the ER24 crew on scene,” she said.

The witness said a medic tackled and disarmed the man before he could assault the already injured paramedic.

The witness said the crew then climbed into an ambulance to get away from the men, who began banging on the sides of the vehicle and the windows, while the two patients from the earlier incident were still inside. The man who stabbed the paramedic also assaulted the driver of the second vehicle involved in the collision.

Mountain Rise police spokesperson Captain Gay Ebrahim said four men were arrested at the scene and charged with assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, as well as driving under the influence of alcohol. Bodasing Harduth said the injured paramedic received several stitches to his face and hand. He also sustained several bruises.

She said the patients in the ambulance were later taken privately to a nearby hospital.
