Lusaka - Zambian police have claimed that a group of Chinese nationals are conniving with locals in terrorising citizens and stealing from them, reports the Post.
However, Zambia Chinese Association President, Zhang Jian, was quick to defend his people, saying it was only a few angry Chinese nationals who were committing these crimes.
Speaking at a consultative meeting over the weekend, Deputy Inspector General of Police Malcom Mulenga warned those involved to desist from such activities.
“We have laws that govern this country and as such, we shall not condone Chinese nationals engaging in criminality,” Mulenga was quoted as saying.
He, however, encouraged the relationship that existed between Zambia and China, saying the southern African country was happy the Chinese decided to invest in that country.
“We are happy as a government that you have brought enormous investments to this country which have resulted in [the] creation of employment for our people. We also understand the challenge of security concerns that you face as foreigners, hence our undertaking that we work together in ensuring that you operate in a safe environment,” said Mulenga.
Over the last 10 years Chinese firms have invested in mining and other sectors in the second largest copper producing nation in the world.
