Buhari govt to spend millions on State House clinic

03 February 2016, 15:16

Abuja - Fresh revelations from Nigeria's 2016 budget have shown that Pesident Muhammadu Buhari's government is set to spend more on the State House clinic than all 16 of the country's public health facilities combined.

According to a Premium Times report, the country's State House Medical Centre, which treats Buhari and government officials, will receive at least N787 million ($39 million) more in fund allocation than the country's 16 federal teaching hospitals.

While the country's federal facilities treat millions of Nigerians and conduct much-needed research, the State House Medical Centre sees to the needs of no more than a thousand patients in total.

Health industry experts have described the development as "outrageous and baffling".

Despite the backlash, officials from the presidency still have not spelt out how the allocated N3.87 billion will be utilised.

Speaking in response to media reports, the president's Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, explained that capital spending on health facilities was in line with Buhari's vision of improving healthcare across the nation.

According to Shehu, the total health budget allocation amounted to N200 billion, more than 50% of which would go to public health facilities, local publication, Vanguard reported.
