Another lavish bash for Mugabe, tuning 92, on the cards

13 January 2016, 08:04

Harare - Celebration preparations for President Robert Mugabe's 92nd birthday are under way, reported the state-controlled Chronicle newspaper on Tuesday.

According to the report, this year's event would be held at Mucheke stadium in Masvingo province.

The February 21 movement, a group established in 1986 to encourage Zimbabwean youths to emulate the nonagenarian’s selfless character and leadership qualities, has vowed to pull all stop to make celebrations the biggest of them all, said the report.

According to Zanu- Pf Masvingo provincial chairperson, Ezra Chadzamira a deadline for the mobilisation of resources for the birthday celebrations is January 31.

He however, said they were waiting on the national executive for budget which would help them know how much they would need for the event.

"We’ve already started and as we speak we’re in the middle of preparing for the big event, we’ve already identified the venue and its Mucheke stadium," Chadzamira was quoted saying.

President Mugabe is known for hosting lavish birthday bashes, despite the southern African country having economic problems.

According to News24, Mugabe blew about $1m at his birthday bash in the exotic Victoria Falls last year.

Party goers were served with beef, kudu and buffalo meat. Eight cakes were also donated.

While he is hailed by many of his African peers as a liberation hero, critics say Mugabe has, over the decades turned the "breadbasket of southern Africa" into a basket case, trampling human rights, justice and democracy.

Mugabe's violent seizure of white-owned farms triggered food shortages and hyper-inflation, while Europe and the United States imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe over elections seen as rigged.
