09 September 2016, 11:48

Algiers - Infirm Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika made a rare public appearance on Thursday, attending the opening of a new international conference centre in Algiers, official media said.

Flanked by younger brother Said, a wheelchair-bound Bouteflika unveiled a plaque at the site before touring parts of the new complex, images broadcast on state television showed.

Bouteflika, who is serving his fourth term in office, suffered a stroke in 2013 that impeded his mobility and speech.

The 79-year-old last appeared in public at a cemetery for those who fought for Algeria's independence are buried in July last year.

Algerian media and social networks have speculated on who will succeed the man who has led the North African country for the past 17 years.
