Zuma might still have to pay back some money - report

31 July 2015, 11:46

Cape Town - Irrespective of what Parliament says, President Jacob Zuma could still end up paying millions for his Nkandla homestead, a report said on Friday.

A presidential proclamation, the need to protect state resources and a pending decision by the high court means Zuma could end up paying at least R11.1m (KES 111m), reported the Mail & Guardian newspaper.

Aside from Public Protector Thuli Madonsela finding that the president should pay an unspecified figure, the Special Investigating Unit found that Zuma should pay R4m (KES 40m) for air-conditioning in the private residences, R4.5m for two roads for the use of Zuma’s family and R3.3m (KES 33m) for landscaping.

Police Minister Nathi Nhleko stated in his report Zuma wasn’t liable to pay any money.

Meanwhile, a proposal by opposition parties to call Madonsela to appear before Parliament’s Nkandla ad hoc committee was voted against by ANC MPs on Thursday, News24 reported.

Last week, ANC MP Thandi Mahambehlala attacked Madonsela’s report, saying that it was misleading.

“All these things [we are discussing] are mentioned in the public protector’s report as unduly benefiting the president.”
