Zimbabwe's MDC admits it 'blundered'

15 October 2013, 13:23

Cape Town – Former Zimbabwean prime minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s Movement for Democratic Change party has finally admitted it made a blunder by agreeing to participate in the 31 July elections without key reforms.

The party's organising secretary Nelson Chamisa said taking part in the July elections was suicidal, as it was the same as going to an examination without a syllabus, according to a Daily News report.

President Robert Mugabe's Zanu-PF party won the elections which Tsvangirai dismissed as a "sham".

The European Union and the United States also rejected the vote on grounds that the polls were not credible.

MDC's defeat has reportedly caused rifts within the party with some calling for the removal of Tsvangirai as leader.

Chamisa however, shot down suggestions that the party’s 61-year-old leader should quit, saying it was not time to change the commander.
