Zimbabweans exchange worthless currency for peanuts

16 June 2015, 18:09

Harare - Few people in Zimbabwe have responded to the government's offer to trade in the country's old currency for U.S. dollars.

Even those that carted in the trillions of Zimbabwe dollars that stopped being used in 2009 expressed dissatisfaction with how little they were receiving in return.

Alice Mhandara said Monday that the 90 trillion dollars she brought to the bank to trade was worth just $0.36 and wouldn't even cover the cost of her bus ride home.

Zimbabwe in 2009 abandoned its currency for the U.S dollar and the South African rand after inflation hit 230 million percent.

Many had expected more for their old notes, while others expressed fear it was part of a plan to restore the old currency.

The government has said it has no such plans.
