Zim referendum in January - Copac

25 October 2012, 10:04

Cape Town - Zimbabwe will hold a referendum in January 2013 as having it this year only applies theoretically, the constitutional parliament select committee (Copac) has said, according to a report on Wednesday.

This comes after the peaceful completion of the Second All Stakeholders Conference, where political parties and stakeholders proposed a few amendments to the draft constitution.

According to a RadioVop report, Copac co-chair Douglas Mwonzora said there were still a lot of logistics that needed to be done before the referendum could be held.

"There are still a lot of things that need to be done. For example the financing as well as the hand over takeover of the constitutional process from Copac to the Zimbabwe Election Commission (ZEC).

"A referendum is an election and it falls under ZEC," Mwonzora said at the end of the conference.

ZEC early this month said about $104m was needed for the referendum. It also indicated that it required at least six weeks to put logistical arrangements in place.

Zimbabwe needs a new constitution to pave way for fresh polls following the country's bloody 2008 elections.
