Zim flood victims live in 'precarious' conditions

13 March 2014, 17:48

Cape Town – The United Nations has reportedly expressed concern over the increasing population at a holding camp for Zimbabwe, saying the development is putting strain on facilities and resources.

According to SABC, at least 2 500 families who were evacuated to the camp were living in precarious conditions with water, food and medicine shortages.

Thousands of Zimbabweans were displaced after torrential rains caused the partial collapse of the Tokwe-Mukosi dam in Masvingo last month.

In its latest statement, the UN's Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said current maize food stocks would run out at the end of March.

The report said government and aid agencies appeared ill-prepared to deal with the humanitarian fallout.

Government has appealed for over R200m to help ease the situation until the next harvest in 2015, said the report.
