Whites in Zim unite against sanctions

18 February 2014, 14:42

Cape Town – A Zimbabwean all-white lobby group has reportedly called on the European Union (EU) to unconditionally remove all sanctions against Zimbabwe and its leaders.

According to newzimbawe.com, the group called Whites Against Sanctions is led by white businessmen who believe they stand for Zimbabwe’s future.

The group’s spokesperson Heath Streak who is a farmer and former Zimbabwe cricket team captain said the sanctions by the United States, Britain and the EU were not only hurting President Robert Mugabe's inner circle, but all Zimbabweans including the white businesses.

An SABC report said the group which is made up of 3 000 white Zimbabweans was scheduled to officially launch in March.

Streak said Zimbabwe would never be able to recover from its current situation without the restrictions being “ultimately lifted”.

This comes as the EU on Monday suspended sanctions against eight of Zimbabwe’s most powerful military and political figures, but kept them on Mugabe and his wife Grace, in a cautious easing of policy after last year’s disputed elections.

Mugabe’s Zanu-PF party has since dismissed EU's concessions as “nonsensical”, with spokesperson Rugare Gumbo saying “we don't accept these half measures. We want total and irrevocable removal of sanctions".

The EU imposed restrictive measures on the southern African country in 2002, in response to a government crackdown on the opposition and the eviction of white farmers from agricultural land.
