Whites in Zimbabwe are politically 'burnt out'

03 December 2013, 11:47

Cape Town – A white Zimbabwean legislator from former prime minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s Movement for Democratic Change party has claimed that most white people pulled out of the country’s politics because they felt victimised.

According to Daily News, Jane Nicola Watson, who is one of the few white lawmakers in Zimbabwe’s parliament, said the white community withdrew from participating in the politics of the country as they felt intimidated because of their support for the MDC.

Since independence, the country’s 75 000 whites, who form less than 1%  of its 13 million population, have been expected to steer clear of politics, the report said.

But that changed with the 2000 vote, when four whites won parliamentary seats. Since then, more and more whites have openly engaged in politics, and currently the MDC has quite a handful of white members.

Watson said white people got politically burnt out but she decided to remain relevant as she felt she was a full Zimbabwean.

President Robert Mugabe says the MDC is a front organisation for British settlers and the MDC whites have particularly aroused his anger.
