We're neutral on Zim - Swiss envoy

17 October 2012, 14:31

Cape Town - Switzerland has declared its neutrality on Zimbabwe and has pledged to assist the country in "any possible way", but this assistance depends on the local political situation, a report said on Wednesday.

According to the state-owned Herald online, Switzerland State Secretary Yves Rossier told journalists before meeting President Robert Mugabe on Tuesday that his country was looking at ways of assisting Zimbabwe.

"We are looking at increasing our support next year, depending on the political situation. Switzerland is a neutral country. We do not belong to any grouping," he said.

According to the report, Rossier "could not hide his joy" at meeting Mugabe.

On greeting Mugabe, Rossier said he "was shaking the hands of history".

Rosier also met Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai.
