Video claims to show abducted Nigerian girls

Cape Town – A video has emerged in which Boko Haram Islamists claim to show some of the more than 200 girls that the Nigeria group abducted last month.

In the video, the girls are seen wearing full-length hijabs and reciting the first chapter of the Koran.

Although not shown in any part of this video, an AFP report says the leader of Boko Haram also appears in the same video saying he will release the schoolgirls in exchange for prisoners.

A total of 276 girls were abducted on 14 April from the north-eastern town of Chibok, in Borno state, which has a sizeable Christian community. At least 223 are still missing.

Boko Haram has been waging an increasingly deadly insurgency in Nigeria's mainly Muslim north since 2009, attacking schools teaching a "Western" curriculum, churches and government targets.
