UN set to authorise DRC force

29 March 2013, 12:40

New York - The UN Security Council is set to authorise a new "intervention brigade" for Congo with a robust mandate to take military action against rebel groups. The council wants to help bring peace to the country's conflict-wracked east.

UN diplomats, speaking on condition of anonymity because negotiations on the brigade have been private, said they expect the council to unanimously approve the draft resolution later on Thursday.

Russia's UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin, the current council president, told a news conference on Thursday that "we shall be adopting a long awaited resolution" that will reconfigure the UN peacekeeping mission in Congo, "recognising the necessity of decisively countering the destructive" violence that has left eastern Congo in turmoil since the 1994 Rwanda genocide.
