UN seeks $60m to feed hungry Zimbabweans

04 March 2014, 14:37

Cape Town – The United Nations is reportedly seeking to raise $60m to help feed Zimbabwe’s two million people in need of food assistance.

According to a Business Day report, the country director of the UN World Food Programme in Zimbabwe, Sory Ouane said the UN has budgeted $86m for its food assistance programme to June this year. The fund however, has a $60m shortfall.

Ouane said Zimbabwe was becoming a “forgotten emergency” as there were other countries like the Central African Republic and South Sudan also in need of aid asiistance.

Ouane urged the world to "dig deeper into their pockets" to help alleviate the country’s rapidly worsening food crisis, said the report.

Food shortages have plagued Zimbabwe since 2000 when agricultural production decreased dramatically.

The government of President Robert Mugabe attributes the food crisis to drought.
