UN alarmed by S Sudan attacks on staff

19 November 2013, 10:40

New York - The UN Security Council is becoming increasingly alarmed by harassment and attacks on its staff by security forces in South Sudan.

The council on Monday heard complaints from Hilde Johnson, the UN special representative, of South Sudanese forces interfering with the U.N. peacekeeping mission there.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says in a report that in five months the UN peacekeepers reported "67 cases of harassment, threats, physical assault, arrest and detention of United Nations staff and seizure of United Nations vehicles" by the army and police.

Ban says a woman on the UN civilian staff was "severely beaten by men wearing uniforms of the South Sudan military and police security services and then detained for more than one hour at a law enforcement facility" on 19 October.
