UN: West Africa's Sahel region 'alarming'

13 December 2013, 18:09

New York - The UN Security Council is calling the situation in West Africa's troubled Sahel region "alarming" and is strongly condemning recent terrorist attacks there.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon briefed the council on Thursday on his visit to the region last month with the president of the World Bank. The bank and the EU pledged $8.25bn to boost economic growth and fight poverty there.

Concerns remain high about the movement of terrorist groups and drug traffickers across the vast region's porous borders. The recent violence in Mali is one worry.

The council adopted a nonbinding presidential statement urging Sahel states to improve regional co-operation on this issue.

The statement also praises the work of the council's al-Qaeda Sanctions Committee in reaching out to Sahel and North African states for future collaboration.
