UN: DRC army in new clashes with rebels

28 August 2013, 08:57

New York - The Democratic Republic of Congo army and M23 rebels fired at each other in new clashes near the key eastern city Goma on Tuesday, a UN spokesperson said.

New fighting has been concentrated at Kibati, a district north of Goma, which UN spokesperson Farhan Haq said "remains tense".

"Sporadic exchange of small arms fire continued today," Haq told a briefing.

Serious new fighting between government forces and M23 rebels erupted one week ago north of Goma.

UN peacekeepers set up a security zone around Goma in July and the UN forces fought alongside the DR Congo army at the weekend when the rebel group fired artillery shells on the edge of the city.

The UN force "stands ready to use all necessary means to defend civilians," said Haq.
