Two arrested for attacks on UK women

12 August 2013, 09:59

Dar es Salaam - Police in Zanzibar said on Sunday they have arrested two suspects in last week's acid attack on two British women on the east African holiday island.

The women, both aged 18 and volunteering at a charity, were attacked in the streets of the island's capital, Stone Town, on Wednesday.

The assailants fled on a motorcycle. There has been no indication of their motive.

The government offered a reward of 10 million Tanzanian shillings ($6 170) for information leading to the capture of the attackers.

Mohamed Mhina, a police spokesperson, said the police had questioned several suspects in recent days and had arrested two. He declined to give further details.

The women are being treated in hospitals in Britain.

Government officials in Zanzibar, which is very dependent on revenue from tourism, have condemned the attack.

There have been other acid attacks on the island, but officials say this is first against foreign visitors.
